For this, we will question you about your lifestyle, daily activities, and habits.

WHY ARE IMPLANT-RETAINED DENTURES BETTER THAN FIXED PORCELAIN TEETH?

Dentures come with various advantages for both aesthetics and function. However, many people do not like the idea of having a denture as it is removable in nature. Nevertheless, it comes with the following benefits -

Cheaper than Porcelain crowns and bridges

Provide better cosmetic value even when the gum and bone has shrunk

Easier to clean, care for, and maintain

ARE IMPLANT-RETAINED DENTURES SUITABLE FOR ME?

For the most part, implant-retained dentures are suitable for people of any age. It can be a matter of preference for most people while it may be an age factor for some. Senior patients generally go for implant-retained dentures as opposed to younger people. Also, implant-retained dentures are recommended to people who do not smoke and are in good health.

HOW TO CARE FOR IMPLANT-SUPPORTED DENTURE?

Your denturist will provide you with the necessary instructions to properly take care of your implant-supported denture. Remove them at night before you go to bed and also when you need to clean them. Then, use the tools recommended by them to clean around the attachments. As a good rule of thumb, dentures should be replaced every 5 years due to various reasons. Similarly, attachments and clips need to be replaced every 6-12 months due to their normal wear and tear.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Dentures are usually made of an acrylic base that matches the shade of your gums. They are professionally designed to replicate the natural look of your teeth and are attached to the base. Thereafter, at least 2 dental implants are then used to hold the denture in place. There are two types of implant-supported dentures namely - bar-retained denture and ball-retained denture. Out of the two, ball-retained dentures are much preferred as they have a reduced cost and are much simpler.

Bar-retained dentures are dentures with a thin metal bar that is attached to the jawbone with 2-5 implants. The metal bar follows the curve of the jaw for flexibility. Different types of attachments including clips and screws are attached to the bar and denture. This denture is then securely fit over the bar which is then clipped into its place with the help of attachments.

Ball/locator retained dentures work like a press-stud mechanism. Here, each dental implant in the jawbone bears an attachment that is latched onto another attachment on the denture. This mechanism helps to keep the denture steady but also helps in removal for cleaning.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT FROM IMPLANT-SUPPORTED DENTURES?

In comparison to regular dentures, implant-supported dentures are much stable. You won’t have to worry about them becoming loose, uncomfortable, or fall out of your mouth. Additionally, it may be easier for you to speak without facing many problems. You may even be able to eat foods that you may not have been able to eat before. Some implant-supported dentures can be designed to have less palate than that of a regular denture. This is due to the fact that attachments will hold the dentures in place and they have to rely less on the palate for suction.

In essence, you can expect the following when it comes to implant-supported dentures -

Increased stability while walking, talking and eating

Less gum/tissue shrinkage

Provides better aesthetics due to less palate coverage

Increased tooth stability while eating

Little to no food seepage in the denture

Build more confidence with better retention
